CENTER for PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Idaho State University is in a unique position relative to the continued professional development of educators. We have the opportunity to work closely with preservice teachers and administrators (as undergraduates) in developing the standards required by the profession. At the same time, we also have the opportunity to work with inservice teachers (those graduated, certified, and/or currently employed as teachers) in developing research-based methods and content for their own professional growth.

Educator preparation should be viewed as a continual model of professional development. As a classroom teacher, we all expect the teacher with 20 years experience to be more masterful of the craft of teaching than a beginning teacher. In order to achieve that, the Intermountain Center for Education Effectiveness, Center for Professional Development, in the College of Education, has been charged with working with schools and teachers in developing and implementing professional growth experiences. These experiences provide the basis for teachers’ continued growth throughout their careers. Please take advantage of the courses that are provided by the ICEE.

Over the past five years the Intermountain Center for Education Effectiveness has held over 1,000 professional development/teacher recertification classes. These classes have met the requirements for teacher recertification and the No Child Left Behind standards, and they have covered subject areas ranging from technology, to reading and bi-lingual education.

Mission

The mission of the Center for Professional Development is to provide quality courses which help teachers, professional educators, and other learners be introduced to new and/or updated teaching techniques, content, and research which will assist them in their profession.
Teacher/Educator Recertification
The Professional Development Courses were initially developed for teacher recertification credits or advancement on the salary scale. Idaho teachers are required to complete six credits every five years to recertify their teaching certificates. Full-fee semester college courses are not needed. The professional development, reduced fee, courses have been created to meet this need.
Other Professionals

Other professionals, non-educators, adult learners, and community members may also enroll in classes and workshops offered through the Intermountain Center for Education Effectiveness Center for Professional Development. Out-of-state students also qualify to enroll in, and complete, these classes.

Fees

The course fee rate for the 2005-2006 school year is $50.00 per credit.
• Graduate Level (597) credit is for:
o Teachers, superintendents, and principals, who have an active Idaho teaching certificate and a Bachelor's Degree.

• Undergraduate Level (497) credit is for:
o Teaching assistants or other educators who are in the process of completing a Bachelor's Degree.

• Non Educator (498/598) credit is for:
o Non-teachers (those without a teaching certificate and/or those not currently employed by an Idaho school district).
o Out-of-state participants.

Fee Reductions

Credit vouchers are also available for teachers who have assisted Idaho State University and the College of Education by supervising a student teacher(s) or those teaching for a partnership school. The Credit Voucher reduces the cost of the credits to a $20.00 semester fee plus $5.00 per credit. The Credit Voucher may be obtained by calling the College of Education Field Experiences Office at 282-3375. Teachers who have spouses who work for Idaho State University may also use the Credit Vouchers. Please have spouse contact their department secretary to obtain the form of the Department of Human Resources.
