Effective Schools Process Model

3 Step Process

Ensure Support Programs, Services, Activities

Coordinate with the Effective Schools Correlates

Implementation of the Effective Schools Model (ESM) requires that all school programs, services, and activities work in concert and support the Effective School Correlates. The following 3 Step Process will help the school team determine the extent to which each existing program, service, and activity coordinates with the ESM, supports the seven Correlates, and ultimately contributes to all student learning.

Step 1 – Identify Current Supporting Programs, Services, and Activities

Identify and list all support programs, services, and activities currently being implemented or being proposed.

Step 2 – Determine the Overall Quality of Programs, Services, and Activities

Individually screen each of the identified programs, services, and activities through the following set of screening questions. The Effective Schools Model expects each program, service, and activity to receive a positive response to each question.

Quality Screening Questions:

1.  Does this program, service, or activity have evidence/data to indicate that it directly contributes to increased academic performance for ALL students?

2.  Does this program, service, or activity align with school/district mission and goals?

3.  Is this program, service, and activity research based?

4.  Does this program, service, or activity have an evaluation process? If not, can one be developed?

5.  Do the outcomes and contributions of this program, service, and activity justify the amount of resources (time, money, staff) required?

Step 3 – Align the Programs, Services, and Activities with Effective Schools Correlates

If a program, service, and activity received a positive response to each of the above questions, the planning team will now determine which Correlate(s) the identified programs, services, and activities align with and support. Write the name of the program, service, and activity next to the Correlate(s) it supports. Use the attached wheel to complete this task.

Programs, services, and activities that do not have positive responses to the quality screening questions and do not align with and support the Correlate(s) framework should be modified or abandoned. Rarely, should a program, service, or activity be kept as a stand-alone. When new programs, services, and activities are proposed, they should also be examined using Steps 2 and 3.
